STOP! RAFFLE TIME!

Thu Sep 5, 2013, 3:07 PM

RAFFLE TIME

It has occurred to me that I have never done a raffle before. And I kinda wanna do one. This raffle is going to be very small and very simple. That's just how it's gonna work. There's not much you have to do, but there are some pretty easy rules to follow.

RAFFLE RULES

  1. You must be watching me. Whether a new watcher or an old watcher, I don't care. No tears.
  2. You must favorite this journal. I don't care if you unfav it after the raffle is over. But you have to fav it the first time.
  3. You must have at least three deviations in your gallery. I'm not giving them to you just because. I want you to deserve them.
  4. You must favorite this journal by Sept. 19th, 2013 or you will not be included in the raffle.

Now that we have the rules established, let's move onto the raffle prizes. They are very small, as I stated earlier. (Maybe I'll do a bigger one another time.)

RAFFLE PRIZES

  • There will be FIVE Raffle Winners!
  • Each will win 20 points :points: and one llama (if you have not already received one from me).

Woo! Raffle! I never really win anything...I've definitely never won a raffle, ever. I DID manage to win a free key charm once, here on dA, which was really cool.

This is nice. I would go for it for sport. But I don't like the idea of a journal's popularity boosted because prizes are offered. Though, I'm not saying this is why you're using the favourites system - I'm pretty sure you're only using it just so it's easier to find a winner. Maybe I will suggest some in-site function for these things so that people wouldn't use the favourites system. Wouldn't you say it's a good idea?

Have a good one, anyway. :)

If deviantArt offered it another way, I would use it. I'm only using the favorite thing to find a winner. Otherwise, I wish I could see who voted in a poll and then have some type of quiz thing to get the right answer, but I can't see who voted for what. Or even who voted at all!
Is there an in-site function?

Yes, that's what I thought. But I don't really understand what you meant with the poll thing. And I hope I didn't offend you.

Nah. I know you're really not the type... or at least you haven't been as far as I know. And what I would do with the poll would be to set up just a simple "pick an answer" thing and whoever picked the right answer gets to join the raffle, so it just would split the drawing into a smaller group.

No, I guess I'm not. :) And, in fact, I'm starting to think that the favourite thing may just be not that important. At the end of the day, participation may as well be implying popularity so all may as well be considered in its right place.

Considering your idea, I don't think I've heard of such a function. One solution may be to make separate journal entries, representing separate answers, for people to favourite.

They are this site's currency. You can buy stuff from the dA store, buy a premium membership, pay for comissions or just donate to those that need them more. But you have to take into account that their value is low in comparison to e.g. a dollar. So they are more useful in some cases and less in other.

So... fake money... (not that most 'real' money is founded on much more but...)

I think it's technically real because you can buy real stuff with it. But you may be onto something interesting there. Can you elaborate on the idea on most money being not founded on much more?

Several major governments, mostly the US, have been printing up money without any gold and/or silver backing since the around 60's.
In fact alot of it was born out of the US trying to change it's currency backing from Gold to Silver,(the original Wizard of Oz novel was actually originally written as a big metaphor based story on this, with various characters representing different economic groups.(which to me took alot out of the magical timelessness of it... but i'm getting off track))
So essentially nowadays in a digital world most currency is based more on debt records than a physical gold/silver brick somewhere that your dollars/pounds/whatever are certificates of.

But from a more philosophical point of view, what made gold and silver valuable in the first place? at the time at which they started being traded they weren't really good for anything... at least the Romans currency made sense... (heh cents...) they payed with Salt (which is where the term 'worth your salt' comes from). at least you can do stuff with salt. what the heck can you do with a gold brick? use it as a paperweight?
though i suppose paper, coins and bricks is easier to count than grains of salt...

I see. Why do you think that money should have some other value besides that it can be traded for other things?

Well it's not so much that i think it should but more that i find it a bit strange that it doesn't.

Well, I guess it would make sense for money, as a representation of value, to be valuable in some intrinsic way but I suppose the essential purpose of it is just to make transactions simpler.
